x402 is an open standard introduced by Coinbase in May 2025. It reuses the HTTP status code 402 “Payment Required” so a server can charge per request. Governance moved to the x402 Foundation; one secondary source says the Linux Foundation formalized it in April 2026 (not verified against a primary source).
PAYMENT-SIGNATURE header (v1 used X-PAYMENT).Coinbase’s CDP facilitator lists Base, Polygon, Arbitrum, World and Solana; USDC is the dominant token. Stellar has a separate production facilitator from OpenZeppelin (since March 2026).
